Pine Jog Elementary School and FAU Environmental Center

First LEED Certified School in South Florida | LEED Gold

 

Pine Jog Elementary is the Palm Beach County School District’s first LEED (Leadership through Energy and Environmental Design) Gold designed and constructed school. The school serves as a model for all subsequent LEED certified schools in the county. The goal for the site landscape development was to design the campus in such a way as to provide learning opportunities for sustainability and good environmental stewardship principles.  The objective was to accomplish this by providing areas for outdoor instruction and interpretation, demonstrating principles of water conservation and creation of different habitats for plants and animals.  In addition, the campus would emphasize the utilization of native plantings, xeriscape principles and the use of collected rainwater in cisterns.  The system would be designed in zones, in accordance with watering needs, complete with rain sensors which would automatically override automatic controllers should rainfall have occurred.
