Wilke D. Ferguson Federal Courthouse

Miami, FL | Photography by Robin Hill

Curtis and Rogers provided landscape design services in partnership with Arquitectonica and HOK for this Civic project. Sited on two downtown city blocks adjacent to the existing Federal Court buildings, the site is 80 percent open space. With a vision of creating a public plaza for community gathering, the concept of a tropical arboretum came to life. The area immediately adjacent to the building is a lawn designed by Maya Lin with seating at the perimeter.  Between the lawn and the street is a buffer of vegetation 30-90 feet in width.  As an urban arboretum, the area is comprised of a large variety of subtropical trees and palms.  Large shaded public seating areas are available throughout the site and provide a much-needed green space in a very urban setting.
