American Airlines Arena

Miami, FL Photography by Robin Hill

The American Airlines Arena is the main venue for shows, concerts, and public events in Miami-Dade County. As part of a collaboration with Arquitectonica, Curtis + Rogers’ work on this project involved site paving, walkways, grading, planting, and irrigation. Of note in the design was the weaving-in of a preexisting paving pattern designed by the artist, Roberto Burle Marx, as part of an “Art in Public Places” initiative. The influence of Burle Marx’s signature geometric pattern can be seen in the form and arrangement of all designed elements, from the landscaped planters to the masterfully graded entrance. Special care was taken to utilize the large distance and height difference from street level to building entrance efficiently. This project was the first development in the then underutilized area of the city between downtown Miami and the Performing Arts complex.
